about
There aren't a lot of people that can say one of their favorite songs was written by a friend, and yet I know quite a few people who would say that ATLANTA ranks among their favorites. They knew American Pragmatists and they love Tommy Habetz.
As I remember it, this song was written in 1992 and was committed to tape a year later. It was the last track on a 4-song demo circulated amongst a community of indie rock nerds, show promoters and whomever else would take a listen.
I started playing in bands right around the time this song was written, and through my own music I've been chasing this sort of immediacy, poetry and conviction my entire life. I've never gotten close. Few have.
30 years later, this is my get-well card to Tommy Habetz. My apologies to Tommy, Lys, Pat and Ted for any liberties or missteps taken. It's been a gesture of humility. I could only hope to honor your collaboration, not replicate it.
Tommy, you are strong and built to resist. Get well.
lyrics
ATLANTA
I was covered in flies in Southern Alaska
In the wind, in the cold in the sleet.
And I fell on my feet at the ends of my legs and I dreamt of you.
I dreamt of you, Margaret Mitchell.
As my skin grew colder. as my skin grew colder,
as my legs grew colder, as my legs grew colder
and the sky went numb.
I remember she had this amazing vocabulary.
She spoke in loaves of bread.
When she cut me she was smiling.
I remember, I remember, I remember, I remember what she said.
Look around you with your eyes in your fists.
These houses are strong and they're built to resist.
Oh, ATLANTA!
Oh, look south to the cotton, look south to the wheat.
I'm thinking about the cold. I'm thinking about the heat.
I'm thinking about my arms. I'm thinking about my feet.
I'm thinking about by life. I'm thinking about..
Wrapped around you with your eyes in your fists, oh look at this.
These houses are strong and they're built to resist.
Oh, ATLANTA!
